Cheap in Price, Rich in Flavour

I recently visited a local Thai restaurant located down the road from me. I have walked past a thousand times, yet never taken the time to stop and have a look at what it had to offer.

Tucked away in a street off the main road makes it an easy shop to find, and you are not overcome with the pollution of noise from passing traffic.

Chili Sha Sha has a very cliché Thai feel, with tables close together, traditional posters and symbols strategically placed around the room, that’s not to say it is a bad thing.

The staff were very friendly and kind, quick to offer a warm greeting smile as you enter. There was a slight language barrier (as for most staff, English was their second language) but I feel it only adds to the experience of eating at a Thai restaurant.

Chilli Sha Sha has done a great job at getting the ratio of quality to quantity exactly right. The food is incredibly delicious, and you aren't left feeling hungry after (if you are able to finish your meal!). My recommendation is that Pad Thai chicken, it was absolutely bursting with flavour, and the meal was big enough to have for lunch the next day as well.

For a meal this nice and large, you would expect a large price tag to come along with it, but it is quite the opposite in fact. The prices they charge are very inexpensive, which makes it a great place to take the family, or a great meal for someone on a uni student budget!

Criniti's Italian Restaraunt

Criniti's is an Italian restaurant directly opposite the Manly Ferry Wharf. This position in heart of Manly makes for a very popular location. It is a great spot to sit and eat late in the afternoon as the sun is setting, and is in close proximity to public transport and other popular venues in Manly.

Criniti's has the largest menu I have personally ever seen (I didn't even know that much Italian food existed!!). The menu extended for roughly 10 pages; there were different options of meats that you could combine with sauces and sides of your choice. The food was nothing short of incredible, when combined with sauces that you choose, you are opened to new tastes that you have never experienced, and you aren't locked into the chef’s capabilities.

They also provide a wide selection of gelato and ice cream to takeaway as well as authentic Italian desserts and coffee. With the added bonus of take home containers up to 1 litre.

The initial service is great, with every need catered for, whether it be drinks, heaters or suggestions when ordering. However, after we made our order, we found ourselves searching for staff to help our needs!

In conclusion, the food was great and had options beyond your wildest beliefs, but the "after sales service" (if you can call it that) definitely needs some work.

Great Potential, Limited Ability.

Along the beachfront at Palm Beach, you will find an espresso cafe, the 2108 espresso for that matter. With its prime position at the ever so popular Palm Beach, it is no surprise that this cafe is constantly packed. However, as a customer, I can't help but feel these aren't repeat customers. With the local bus stopping right out the front, it is easy for visitors to quickly grab a coffee or snack on their way down to the beach.

The staff are young, usually girls but with the occasional exception. I believe they are really trying to do their best and be as helpful as possible, but it seems to me that they have not received adequate training, and are instead left to workout how to deal with difficult customers, a hard task for a teenager. If your order is actually processed correctly, more often than not you will find yourself waiting a long time, maybe even double checking they haven't forgot your order.

The position of the cafe limits the amount of cooking that can be done on premises, therefore limiting the choice for the customer. The taste of their pre-prepared sandwiches suggests to a food enthusiast (much like myself) that they weren't made today, or yesterday either.

I was very disappointed in this cafe. I may not have the greatest business sense, but I do strongly believe that they are not using their position to its full advantage.

Zubi Cafe

Zubi at Newport is a cafe that has been designed to suit the more "alternative" person, with very individual pieces of furniture and an outdoor seating area with numerous plants (which takes away the suburban feel). Despite the great effort by this cafe in attracting this target market, many of its customers (from my observations) are middle-aged individuals, maybe in early retirement or working part time, who enjoy reading the paper with their morning coffee. In saying that, if I were an individual in this situation, I would not look past Zubi. The coffee is excellent; it has been made with absolute care, and is crafted from expert baristas. While you wait for your coffee, the employees are so friendly and accommodating, that you leave feeling as though you have known this person for years rather than minutes. Furthermore, the food is made for you when ordered, they do not have pre-prepared main meals ready to go. Although this increases the wait time in food, you can really taste how fresh it is. Overall, a great cafe with a great culture, however, being directly on the main road makes for a noisy experience.

Relish: Avalon's secret

Along the quiet streets in North Avalon, you will find a small cafe nestled away amongst the house, known as Relish. Although in a suburban setting, Relish has done well to create a comfortable cafe to cater for large and small groups.

The staff at Relish are all relatively young, and seem to enjoy the company of customers and their colleagues. This cafe has blurred the lines between customer and employee; you'll find that there are no uniforms, and a very friendly relationship between customer and business that extends beyond the exchange of money for products. This makes for a very warm and friendly environment, making it more of a place to "hang out" rather than to simply eat at.

The food is excellent; my personal favorite is the Chicken and avocado baguette, which is very filling and tasty, yet at the same time quite healthy.

The only negative contribution I have is that the cafe uses younger inexperienced baristas, which means some day’s coffees will be great, and other days they are not so great.
